Sometimes the home you’ve lived in for years starts to feel a little different.

The shower might be harder to get into. Stairs may become more difficult. Getting up from your favourite chair might take more effort. You may find yourself asking someone else for help with things you used to do yourself.

Home Access Group can help arrange an occupational therapy (OT) home assessment to understand what’s becoming difficult and identify practical ways to make your home work better for you.

What is an OT Home Assessment?

An OT home assessment looks at you, your daily activities and the home you live in.

An occupational therapist can look at how you move around your home, how you manage everyday tasks and whether anything in your environment is making those activities more difficult.

The assessment may identify:

  • Safety concerns
  • Mobility difficulties
  • Difficulties with transfers
  • Bathroom access problems
  • Entrance and exit difficulties
  • Trip or fall risks
  • Areas of the home you are avoiding
  • Equipment that may help
  • Home modifications that may make everyday activities easier

Most importantly, the assessment starts with what matters to you.

Your home should support your independence

Being independent doesn’t necessarily mean doing everything without help. It can mean being able to:

Get yourself into the shower

Make your morning coffee

Get safely through the front door

Move around your home with confidence

Continue using and enjoying the garden you love

Stay in the home you’ve built your life around

Sometimes a relatively small change can make one of these everyday activities much easier. An OT can help identify what might make the biggest difference.

We start with you – not a product

We don’t start by asking: “Do you need a grab rail?”

We start by asking: “What are you finding difficult?”

Because the right solution depends on the person.

An OT may find that you would benefit from:

  • A grab rail
  • A handrail
  • A ramp
  • Bathroom changes
  • Shower seating
  • Improved lighting
  • Changes to access
  • Assistive technology
  • Different equipment
  • A change to how an activity is performed
  • Or simply some practical advice

The recommendation is based on your individual circumstances.

What happens during an OT Home Assessment?

Being independent doesn’t necessarily mean doing everything without help.

It can mean being able to:

We’ll want to understand what you’ve noticed and what has become more difficult.

You might tell us:

“I’m worried about falling in the shower.”

“The stairs are becoming harder.”

“I don’t feel confident getting out of the front door.”

“I can’t get up from my chair as easily anymore.”

“I’ve stopped using the garden because it’s too difficult to get outside.”

These everyday experiences are important.

The OT may look at areas such as:

Bathroom
Shower access, toilet transfers, available support and how safely you can use the bathroom.

Bedroom
Getting in and out of bed and moving between the bedroom and bathroom.

Kitchen
Preparing food, reaching commonly used items and moving safely around the kitchen.

Stairs
How you manage stairs and whether additional support could help.

Entrances
Steps, thresholds, ramps, pathways and getting safely in and out of the property.

Living Areas
Moving between rooms, getting up from chairs and managing everyday activities.

Once the OT understands your needs, they can recommend practical options.

These might involve equipment, changes to the way you do something, assistive technology or modifications to your home.

For example, a recommendation could be as simple as adding a grab rail in the right location.

For someone else, it might involve a more substantial change to a bathroom or entrance.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution.

Could an OT assessment be right for you?

An assessment may be worth considering if:

  • You’ve had a fall or are worried about falling
  • You’re finding stairs more difficult
  • Getting into or out of the shower has become harder
  • You’re having difficulty getting up from chairs or the toilet
  • You’re using a walking frame, wheelchair or other mobility equipment
  • You’re asking family members for more help
  • You’ve stopped doing activities you used to enjoy
  • You’re avoiding parts of your home
  • You’ve recently returned home from hospital or rehabilitation
  • Your mobility or physical abilities have changed
  • You’re wondering whether your home needs to be modified

You don’t need to wait until something becomes a major problem.

You don’t have to know what you need

You don’t need to know whether you need:

A grab rail

A ramp

A shower modification

Assistive technology

Improved lighting

That’s part of the reason for having an assessment. You simply need to explain what you’re finding difficult. The OT can help work out what may be appropriate.

What about Support at Home?

If you’re receiving support through the Support at Home program, your provider may be able to arrange an OT assessment where appropriate.

Home modifications under the Assistive Technology and Home Modifications (AT-HM) scheme require an OT prescription. The scheme can support a range of modifications intended to address a participant’s assessed needs and help optimise function or manage disability or age-related functional decline.

This can include modifications such as handrails, ramps, bathroom changes and improved access.

Your Support at Home provider can help you understand the available options and determine the appropriate pathway for your circumstances.

Making changes doesn’t mean giving up independence

Sometimes people worry that modifying their home means admitting they can no longer manage.

It can actually mean the opposite.

A well-chosen change can help you keep doing things for yourself for longer.

A handrail isn’t about taking independence away.

It can help you use the stairs independently.

A shower modification isn’t about giving up your routine.

It can help you continue showering safely.

A ramp isn’t about changing who you are.

It can help you continue getting in and out of your home.

The goal isn’t to change your life. It’s to help you keep living it.

Your home can change with you

Your needs can change over time.

Your home can change too.

Sometimes the best solution isn’t moving somewhere else.

Sometimes it’s making the home you already love work a little better.

Small changes can make a big difference.

Ready to find out what could help but you’re not quite sure what you need? That’s okay.

If you’re finding things around your home more difficult, an OT home assessment can help you understand what is happening and what options may be available.

You can contact Home Access Group directly, or speak with your Support at Home provider about arranging an assessment.
